Dr. Dandoy was born in Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. She was the third of five children of Manuel and Isidra Antonio. Both parents had been educators as well as three of her siblings.
In her native Philippines, Dr. Dandoy taught in her hometown after undergoing teacher training in her province's capital. Before World War II she furthered her teacher training and education at the Philippine Normal University, the premier school for educators in the country. Before her graduation, she was given a teaching position at the school's laboratory school, the first to receive such an honor. While teaching at the school's laboratory school, she worked as a curriculum writer for the Philippine's Department of Education.
Dr. Dandoy came to study in the U.S. after the war. She received her doctorate in education from Stanford University, in 1952. After her studies at Stanford, she went back to the Philippines and worked as a professor of education at the University of the East and as principal of the university's laboratory school.
She returned to the U.S. in 1956 and worked as an adjunct faculty member at University of California, Los Angeles. Later in 1956, Dr. Dandoy became a professor in the School of Education at Fresno State College. While at Fresno State College Dr. Dandoy was a strong advocate for all teachers. She served as both teacher and mentor to many prospective teachers. She was state chairperson for the Business and Professional Women's Club's Scholarship Committee. She was active in the Fresno State teachers' honor society, Kappa Delta Pi. She co-founded the Organization of Filipino-American Educators of Fresno. She also established scholarships for prospective educators at Fresno State and her alma maters Stanford and Philippine Normal University.
She is survived by Dr. Rodrigo "Rudy" A. Dar, a nephew, whom she raised as her own child and his wife Evelyn; their daughters, Maria Stella and Maria Cristina; her brother, Manuel Antonio an attorney, and his wife Gloria in the Philippines; and other nieces and nephews and their children.
A Viewing will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church on Thursday, February 5, 2009, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
