In 1832, during the Black Hawk War, Loomis was stationed at Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Promoted to major in 1838, and lieutenant-colonel in 1840. He was commended in the report of Major-General (later President) Zachary Taylor, in 1839, for securing the frontier lands of Georgia during the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). Loomis was given command of the Sixth Infantry Regiment at Fort Towson, Florida, in 1842. At Fort Towson, he purchased books for a library and maintained a school on the post. In 1844, he was given command at Fort Gibson (in present-day Oklahoma). At his new post, he built a church and a school upon the fort's grounds. Served during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848), and then the Third Seminole War (1855-1858).
During the Civil War, he recruited volunteers in Connecticut and Rhode Island, and superintended recruitment for the Union Army at Fort Columbus, New York. In the final year of the Civil War, after fifty-four years of service including participation in six wars, he was brevetted a Brigadier-General.
