Betty was born in Henryetta, Oklahomaon June 2, 1924, to Robert and Ersley Humphrey. She was raised along with her sister Eunice in Henryetta, Adaand then McAlester, where in high school she met the love of her life, Bill. He picked her up from her high school graduation and they drove straight to the local Salvation Army Chaplain's home, where he conducted their wedding ceremony on May 22, 1942. It was a marriage that would last just over 55 years.
Bill was drafted into the U. S. Army during WWII, and Betty followed him to Fort BraggNorth Carolinato be with him as much as possible until he was to be shipped overseas. During that time he developed spinal meningitis and during his 6 week hospitalization she was at his bedside every moment they would allow her to be, leaving just in time to catch the last bus of the day back to her apartment in town. After Bill was sent to Europe, Betty returned to McAlester, where she gave birth only a few months later to their first son, Harold. It was 10 years before her youngest son Howard was born. Because of the difference in age she always claimed to have raised two "only" children.
Betty worked as a homemaker until the family moved to Moore in 1960. In the early 1960s she became an Avonrepresentative to earn extra money for the household. She went to work for the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission in 1974, retiring as a Senior Interviewer in 1989. Bill had retired in 1984 and she wanted to spend more time spoiling him and her first grandchild Steven. It was another 7 years before her second grandchild, John came into her life, and she loved both of them very much.
Following Bill's death in 1997 she and her sister and best friend Eunice became almost inseparable. They went almost everywhere together, and when seen alone, were often asked where the other was. They took many sightseeing tours together, the final one being in 2006 when they went on a Caribbean cruise.
Betty was a member of EasternAvenueBaptistChurchand greatly enjoyed her church family. She was a loving sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Her thoughts were always of others and rarely of herself. She considered herself blessed to have lived a long happy life and was ready to go home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
