Henry Wager Halleck (1815-1872) - Find a Grave Memorial

Civil War Union Major General. Born in Westernville, New York, he graduated from West Point in 1839, was commissioned an officer and later was an instructor at West Point. When the Civil War began, he accepted a commission as a Major General and succeeded Major General John Fremont as the commander of the Department of the Missouri, headquartered at St. Louis, in November 1861. In July 1862, he was named President Abraham Lincoln's General-in-Chief and assumed all the administrative duties of war. When General U.S. Grant was named General-in-Chief of all the Union Armies in March 1864, Halleck assumed the position of chief of staff and remained so until war's end. After the war, he was in command of the Military Division of the South until his death at Louisville, Kentucky.
