Isaac was the fourth child born to Chester and Olive. Born in New York, he lived with his family at Warren, Lake County, Illinois and here, at the age of 19, Isaac enlisted in the 45th Illinois Infantry, Company I. The Illinois Roster of Enlisted men notes he enlisted the 24th of December, while American Civil War Soldiers record held at Provo says he enlisted in 26 Nov 1861.

His brother's James and Simon and sisters Dell and Pluma's future husbands, Charles Butterfield and James Carr respectively, were also all Union soldiers.

Isaac died serving his county at Louisville, Kentucky and was buried here with honor. His great-grandfather, Amasa, was a Revolutionary War soldier.
