William Owston of Delaware, Ohio was the ancestor of the largest group of Owston families in the United States.

The son of Thomas Owston and Ann Hunter, he was born at Sherburn, East Riding, Yorkshire and christened at the same place on June 5, 1803.

He was married three times:

1. to Jane Spink at Rillington, East Riding, Yorkshire on December 10, 1825. All of his children were born to this union.

2. to Betsey Burnham on January 3, 1854 at Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio, USA.

3. to Elizabeth Ann Kolbflesh, the widow of Seneca Perry Wentz, on September 6, 1865 at Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio, USA.

He came to New York circa 1831 and settled in Delaware, Ohio circa 1833.

A stone mason by trade, he built many of the early buildings in Delaware, Ohio.

His children included:
