One of the men was an escaped convict and the three were in the process of planning an armed robbery of a payroll courier. When Detective Sergeant Lemkemeier asked the driver who he was, the suspect produced a revolver and opened fire shooting and fatally wounding Detective Sergeant Lemkemeier. He died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.
All three fled the scene and two were quickly arrested. The convict was able to elude officers until October of that year when Detectives received word he was returning to St. Louis. The detective's set up a sting and attempted to arrest him as he stepped off of a streetcar. When he produced his revolver the detectives opened fire, killing him.
Detective Sergeant Lemkemeier was in charge of the Homicide Squad at the time of his death. He had been with the Saint Louis Police Department for 15 years.
Detective Sergeant Lemkemeier lived at home with his parents at 2329 (A) Warren St.
He is survived by his father Henry C. Lemkemeier and two brothers, one of whom was also a Detective with the same agency. he was predeceased by his mother Anna (nee Nieman) Lemkemeier in 1919.
The wake was held at the Leidner Livery & Undertaking Company, located at 1417 North Market.
Interment was at Zion Cemetery on 07/29/1922.
