Russell Bain, 90, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mr. Bain was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Spearville, Kan., to John and Pearl Bain. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, fighting in Rome-Arno and the Northern Appenines.
He won the American Defense Service medal along with two bronze stars and a Good Conduct medal. After the war, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve, and later the Texas National Guard until 1978.
He won several national championships in marksmanship in the 90th Infantry Division and in National Rifle Association classification matches. He was also an NRA firearms instructor.
After World War II, he graduated from the Texas Highway Patrol Training School in 1948. He retired as a state trooper with the 12th Texas DPS in 1983.
He was promoted to Trooper III before retirement and was awarded a special Texas Ranger commission.
He was a member of Khiva Shrine, a 50-year member of Amarillo Masonic Lodge No. 731, Grand Commander Knights Templer of Texas No. 48 and of Gideons International.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy Bain and wife Cindy of Amarillo; a grandson, Devin Bain and wife Kameron; a stepgranddaughter, Amy King and husband L.J.; and several nieces and nephews.
