Dr. McDonell was born in Lake Eunice township, Becker Co., MN on July 15, 1876, the son of J. A. B. McDonell and Mathilda McCoy-McDonell, pioneer settlers of the county and one of the first to construct a summer resort on the southeast shore of Cormorant Lake.

After finishing his high school career in Detroit Lakes he attended the state university and majored in medicine, but before he finished his course the Spanish-American war started and he enlisted for service and spent 18 months in the Philippines, returning to complete his university course and then went to Annapolis. This started his military career which was not ended until his retirement in August of 1940. During his period of service he spent many years on board various battleships but in later years he was assigned to land duty at various points, a part of the time in charge of naval hospitals in Pensacola, San Diego, and Mare Island. He was honored by selection as a member of the American College of Surgeons because of his commendable contribution to the profession in which his mature life had been spent.
