James was one of nine children born to Robert and Jane Dobbins Armor.
The other children were: John A., Patsy M., Eliza J., Nancy A., Polly A., Emily E., Elizabeth Ann and Permelia Clementine Armor.
James M. Armor died in the Civil War, seven months before his son James R. Armor was born. He married Martha Susan Roberts July 31, 1854, she was the daughter of Matthew Roberts.

According to the 1870 Census for Lawrence County, Alabama, they had the following children: John M. age 13, Nora age 11, Susanna (s/b Savannah) age 9 and James R. Armor age 7.
They had one daughter, Mary Ann Armor, born October 31, 1855, died August 20, 1856.

James Miller Armor was a private in Co. A of the 4th Alabama Calvary. He was born September 7, 1829, and died April 4, 1863, in Tuscumbia. He is buried in Old Prospect Cemetery. Family tradition says that he died of pneumonia resulting from the measles he contracted from his children while home on furlough. He was going to rejoin his unit in Pulaski, Tennessee, when he died. He was the son of Robert Armor, a prominent pioneer of Lawrence County. The family settled in Robert's Cove near Penitentiary Springs on Byler Road.
