Death Claims Two Old Residents
Jos. H. Armstrong
Joseph H. ARMSTRONG, was born in Alleghany county, New York, March 10, 1861. He moved with his parents to a farm in LaSalle county, Illinois, when but a small boy. On November 10, 1892, he married Ada NEWTON and established himself on a farm near Tonica. In 1908 he moved with his family to Emporia, Kansas, continuing to farm until 1918 when he retired. His health had been failing since 1924, but his condition was not serious until about one week before his death, which occurred on Friday evening, March 25. He was an active member of Tonica Baptist church while living here.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter Evelyn of San Francisco, California, one son Earle of Amarillo, Texas; also one grandson, Edward ARMSTRONG, and two sisters, Mrs. May THAYER of Joliet, Illinois and Mrs. Charles THAYER of Fort Morgan, Colorado.
Those attending from out of town were a sister of Mr. ARMSTRONG's, Mrs. George THAYER, a nephew and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Allen THAYER, a niece, Mrs. Harry CULBERTSON, all of Joliet; two nieces, Mrs. Genie WOODIN and Mrs. John EDWARDS of Marseilles; also a niece from Lockport, Mrs. W.J. SCHULER; Mrs. and Mrs. C. E. KNAPP and Mrs. Mabel ROBERTS of Ottawa; I.M. BASSETT and Mrs. Mary BRADY of Granville.
The remains, accompanied by the widow and her children, arrived in Tonica Monday morning. Funeral was held from the George R. FORD home to the Methodist church on the same day at 2:30, where old friends and neighbors had gathered to pay their last respects to one who was prominent in the affairs of this community in bygone years. Rev. C.L. SHULT conducted the services and Mr. and Mrs. E. WILLIAMS sang, accompanied by Mrs. Grace WARD on the organ. Burial was made in Fairview cemetery.
Mrs. ARMSTRONG, Earle and Evelyn desire in this way to gratefully thank all those who in any way helped and comforted them during the last sad rites for their loved one.
