Sam Maratta(y) was born in Spencer County, the youngest of 5 children. He married Anne Ireland Tichenor, who was also his 3rd cousin, in 1901. The couple decided to try the 'prairie cure' for his asthma and moved to New Mexico, where they had two daughters, Dorothy & Mary Frances. Eventually they headed west to California, before returning home to Kentucky, when the west coast did not fare well for their daughters.

Sam was a salesman, farmer and grocer at various times during his life. He also had a small dairy farm and was adept at handing livestock, in spite of what many of his family called 'his weak eyes'. This was possibly referring to a congenital condition called nystagmus, which exists in some of his male descendants.

Sam was attacked by a bull one morning and subsequently died of injuries sustained during the accident.
