Mr. James Lee Taylor, Sr., age 85 of Lufkin, Texas, formerly of Brownsville, Texas, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008 following a lengthy illness. Mr. Taylor was born August 16, 1922 in San Benito, Texas, to Joe A. and Angie E. Taylor.
Mr. Taylor served in the Amy Air Corps during World War II, and upon completing his military duty, he attended the University of Texas at Austin and received his BBA Degree from Texas A&I University, Kingsville, Texas. Mr. Taylor was also a 32nd degree Mason in the San Benito Lodge. The Taylor's lived in Brownsville, Texas from 1955 until they moved to Lufkin in 2005. Mr. Taylor worked as an Independent Insurance Agent until his retirement.
Mr. Taylor was active with the Boy Scouts of America. As a young teen he completed and received the coveted Eagle Scout Award. Mr. Taylor later advanced into leadership where he was an active Scoutmaster, National Scout Jamboree Scoutmaster in 1960 and later served as Council Jamboree Chairman. Mr. Taylor served on the executive board of the Rio Grande Council in South Texas for many years. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth White Taylor; two children daughter Rebecca McLendon and husband Tom, of Crockett; son James Lee Taylor, Jr. of Flower Mound; five grandchildren David W. McLendon, of Fort Worth, Mary Elizabeth Durrett and husband Ray, of Lufkin, Deanna B. Teague and husband Jon, of Los Alamos, NM, Katherine Elizabeth Taylor and Charles Demaree Taylor, both of Flower Mound; three great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins and good friends.
Graveside Services for Mr. James Lee Taylor, Sr., were held Monday, May 12, at 10:00 a.m. in the Cedar Point Cemetery, Belott, Texas, with the Rev. Tom Spath, First Presbyterian Church, Crockett, officiating.
A Memorial Service was held Tuesday, May 13, at Pinecrest Retirement Community Chapel with the Reverend Jim Tom Ainsworth of Crockett.
Pallbearers were David McLendon, Charles Taylor, Ray Durrett, Ronald Finke, Wilson Norris and Larry Meyer.
