Entered the US Navy in May [13,] 1861 as a Master's Mate. Served aboard the USSs South Carolina, Choctaw, Alabama, Stars and Stripes, Dale and Ohio; also served in the batteries at Portsmouth, NH. Captured off Cape Hatteras, August 9, 1861. Released, Dec., 1861. Promoted to Acting Ensign, Oct. [13,] 1862. Wounded in the attack of his squadron [the West Gulf Squadron] on the Haines Bluff Batteries in the rear of Vicksburg, MS. Pensioned for disability [on Oct. 30, 1865].

The funeral services of our shipmate, Lieut. Commander, William A. Abbott, will be held at his late residence, 3261 Washington St., Jamaica Plain, on Thursday, at 11:30 am. Interment at Andover. Train leaves union station at 2:15 pm. Shipmates are earnestly requested to attend.
