Major League Baseball Player. Born Randall Pennington Gumpert, he was a pitcher for ten seasons (1936 to 1938, 1946 to 1952) with the Philadelphia Athletics, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox and Washington Senators. He made his big league debut at the age of 18 with the Athletics on June 13, 1936 and would struggle with a high ERA for the following two seasons. After an eight year absence, he returned to the Major Leagues in 1946 and enjoyed one of his most successful years, as he recorded 11 wins while posting a 2.31 ERA with the Yankees. His other notable career highlight includes selection to the 1951 American League All Star Team. In 261 career games, Gumpert won 51 and lost 59 with a 4.17 lifetime ERA. His career was interrupted while he served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. After retiring as a player, he served as a coach with the Yankees during the 1957 season.
