Bob was the son of the late Lawrence Layne and Sallie Howell Layne. He retired from P.P.G. with 26 years of services. He also worked for New Hope Telephone for 20 years. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and his community as both city councilman and mayor.
Survivors include his sons, Robert E. Layne Jr. of Owens Cross Roads, and David Layne and wife Patricia of New Hope; granddaughter, Lauren Layne; and sisters, Dorothy Thomason of Huntsville, Vickie Whitaker of New Hope, and Christine Gibb of Toney.

Robert is the son of David Lawrence Layne and his 1st wife Gertrude (Gentry) Layne, who died in 1928. David was married to Sarah on July 23, 1929. Robert was extremely young when his mother died, and the only mother he knew was Sarah.
