Akulina was born in the Ukraine in a town that was destroyed during WWII. Her son Peter remembers being in her arms as Akulina and the people of her village were lined up in front of a firing squad. After that she was taken to Dachau and then to a lumber mill and work camp with her two children and other relatives.

She and her second husband and four children immigrated from Germany to the US by plane on Feb 16, 1957. They lived in Flushing, Queens for many years, but would take the train to South Bound Brook to tend to the flowers on their graves and to do errands in the Ukrainian community. Akulina died on Feb. 20, 1996 and is buried with her husband and near her son Nicolas. At the time of her death she left her children: Peter Nowik, Nicolas Nowik, Nina Douglas, Wasyl Osadschenko; and several grandchildren.
