My beautiful, strong and wonderful Mother!

Mom was born on May 5, 1922 probably at Wolf Run, near Orma, West Virginia.
Her mother was Roxie Butler Jackson b. 1902 Calhoun County WV d 1972 in Akron, Ohio(daughter of Alec Butler and Dora Laughlin Butler). Her father was Homer Sampson (sometimes Wayne) b 1902 Calhoun County WV (son of Pricey Wayne and Floyd Sampson, Rush Run, Calhoun County). Her stepfather was Arley Jesse Jackson.
She has brothers O.L."Jack" Jackson and Robert Leon Jackson by her mother, and two other siblings, Clayton and Vallie Wayne, by her father. Her father (a romantic type) also had some other children, but she did not get to meet them.
Her early life was hard, full of chores and often short on kindness.
She left home at age 12, lived with and helped keep house for a preacher and his wife, Harry and Irene Poe, and managed to finish her education. Later, she moved to Charleston and shared an apartment- and many adventures- with her three friends, Helen, Helen and Abby.

Mom was a graduate of Grantsville High School in Grantsville, WV. She attended Charleston School of Commerce, a secretarial school in Charleston, WV, Buchtel University in Akron, Ohio and also trained in Accounting through level 7 at Hammel University in Akron.

For 16 years she was an executive assistant with D.M. Siff Shoe Company, and helped Julius & Lawrence Siff run the company founded by their brother, David. The company had 85 stores in 5 states. She did a lot of traveling.

Then in 1955 she saw Daddy at a square dance and decided to marry him. (She did not tell him until much later.) They were wed on the morning of December 31, 1956 at the "Chapel in the Garden" in Angola, Ind, - a very cold day. On the way back to Akron, the car broke down and they spent the rest of the day in a drugstore with only stale honeybuns and bad coffee.

I was born on January 31, 1958 in Akron, Ohio. My sister, Paula-Kay Latou(Mercer) was born in Boston, Mass. on February 15, 1961.
She had quit working with Lawrence and Julius after I was born; they remained close friends until the two brothers passed away.
About 1966 she decided computers were the wave of the future and was fascinated with them. She took a programming class and trained on the IBM 1401 at the IBM Training School in Mansfield, Ohio. Remember the old punchcards? She decided to stay home with us until we were older and never went to work in the computer field.
After we moved to Virginia in the 70s, Mom attended Lord Fairfax Community College and took a series of real estate courses.

Mom started selling real estate in the 1970s and obtained her brokers license. She worked in Virginia and then later on in Eastern North Carolina, first at Hill Realty in Kinston and then on her own. She was proud of the fact that she would not sell someone a house that they could not afford. Always she would have them think about what could happen should they lose their job, have a sick child, or worse.
Health problems finally slowed her real estate business, and she decided to open a Flea Market booth at Moorehead City. She had a great stand with touch lamps, dolls, reading glasses and other attractive merchandise. She had Daddy selling knives. It got them out of the house and they made lots of friends.
They both enjoyed flea marketing, but Daddy was tired from working all week at the factory and the drive was almost an hour. So she moved to the Goldsboro Flea Market, which was only 20 minutes away. Daddy was still tired, but a little less so.

Mom and Daddy never complained about much of anything and never spent money on luxuries for themselves. They just worked on raising us. They gave me everything that I needed, helped me through college and law school, and were always there for encouragement and to tell me that I was loved. I could not have asked for better parents.

She was 84 years old when she died and she had heart problems, breathing problems, bone problems, etc.- but I was stunned. It did not seem possible to exist in a world where she was not. Though it was not a rational thought, Daddy felt the same. We stumbled through the next two years together until Daddy passed away.

She and Daddy were a terrific team. I miss them both.
Mom's mtdna is j1b1.
Thank you to all of the kind people who are leaving flowers for Mom!
