William was the son of John Monroe and Mary Elizabeth (George) Chisum. He served in the Civil War as a Private in Co. K, Parson's Brigade, 12th Regiment, Texas Cavalry. He married Sara Alice Gray in 1872, and they had at least two children: Willie H Chisum McClelland, and Zanona Chisum.
