Professional Football Player. He was born Robert Glen Wharton and played at the right guard position for four seasons (1960 to 1963) in the American Football League with the Houston Oilers. He was a member of two AFL championship teams (1960 and 1961 Oilers). He achieved All-American status during his collegiate years at the University of Houston and was inducted into their Athletics Hall of Honor in 1974. Wharton was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the 11th round of the 1958 NFL and would appear in 56 career regular season games. He died from complications of pulmonary disease.
