Graveside services for Hurshel R. Adsit, 73, of El Cajon will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Alpine Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at El Cajon Church of God. Paris-Frederick Mortuary is in charge. He died Saturday at home.
Mr. Adsit was born in Arkansas and lived in the county for 25 years. He was a security officer for Rand Corp. in Santa Monica, retiring in 1965.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie; son Larry of South Carolina; daughters Joyce Keeran of Santee, Lavern MacLennan and Karen Thomson, both of Hawthorn, Calif.; brothers Boyd of Denver and Glyn of Oregon; sister Billie Jean Eckstein of Palm Springs; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Hurshel and Glyn Carter were born to Reecie Lillian Dawson and her first husband, Roy Carter. During the time she was married to Cyrus Boyd Adsit, the boys took the name of Adsit as their surname. They used that surname throughout their lives. No records have been found to show that Boyd adopted them.
Note: Glyn's granddaughter told me that the boys were told there was a formal adoption by Boyd Adsit. Her brother may have the adoption records, but they may have been destroyed in the Oklahoma City bombing.
