Funeral services for Jo Gene Blackwell, 63, of Bovina will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Friona with Rev. Steve Patterson, Methodist minister from Dalhart and Leon Talley, minister of the 6th St. Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in the Friona Cemetery by Blackwell Funeral Home.
She went to be with her Lord early Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 2008. She was born March 10, 1945, in Buna Vista to Joseph and Shirley Tate Matson. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1963. She married John R. Blackwell on March 2, 1963, in Amarillo. She moved to Muleshoe in 1963 from Amarillo. She was employed by West Plains Hospital and on June 1, 1971 she received her Nursing Home Administrators license and was named the assistant administrator of the Hospital and Muleshoe Nursing Home. On April 1, 1980, she moved to Friona and on Aug. 24, 1980, she was named Administrator of Prairie Acres Nursing Home, a position she held until July of this year when she accepted the position of Administrator of Park View Nursing home in Muleshoe until her death. She moved to Bovina in Aug. of 1997.
She and her husband owned Blackwell Funeral Home in Friona and she became a licensed Funeral Director on Dec. 5, 2006. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Friona and taught Sunday School in the 3, 4, and 5-year-olds for over 20 years. She was a past member of the ESA sorority, Texas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. She started the Empty Stocking Fund to aid children who could not afford Christmas and headed that for many years. She also headed the Parmer County Child Welfare board since the early 1980's.
Survivors include her husband, John; two daughters, Melanie Montoya of Glendale, Ariz., and Marcia Brown of Bovina; her mother, Shirley Parrack of Grand Island, Neb.; two sisters, Carol Rowell of Grand Island, Neb., and Darlene Barnes of La Marque; three half-sisters, Shirlene Christal of Conroe, Rossi Nelson of Palm Springs, Calif. and Jocelyn Rodriguez of Harlingen; one step-brother, Kelley Parrack of Amarillo; and five grandchildren, Brittany, Blake and Brennen Montoya and Brea and Brooklynn Brown.
