Moses Scofield was one of seven children born to Charles G. Scofield and Matilda Frasier (d: 1860). In August of 1861, he enlisted in the 5th Iowa Cavalry along with his brother, William Scofield, and his father, Charles. His father elected to return home to Iowa, at the end of this three year enlistment. Both Moses and his brother reenlisted and mustered out at the war's conclusion. Moses retained the rank of Private during his entire enlistment period. His brother and father served as noncommissioned officers; all in Company A. Following the war, Moses and William moved to California (circa 1874). Thereafter, they may have moved to Colorado. The father, Charles, remarried and had another five children.
