Lawyer. Born in New York, Mr. Babcock grew up on a farm in Vermont. He was admitted to the bar in 1836. After that he continued to practice his profession in Perry until 1848, when he came to St. Louis. Here he practiced law, giving special attention to the examination of land titles, until he was appointed deputy recorded of St. Louis during the administration of Stephen Barlow as recorder. His connection with the recorder's office made him familiar with real estate in St. Louis, especially the values of realty. As a result, while still holding the office he began operating in a small way in real estate. When his term off office expired he continued to purchase and sell property of this kind, becoming ultimately a large holder of real estate. He continued in this business until 1866 when he retired from business other than that of looking after his investments and financial interests.

Married twice, Mr. Babcock was survived by his three children: Frederick G., William L. and Lucy H.
