Azell Austin Campbell passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008.
Graveside service: 3 p.m. Monday in Restland Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas. Visitation: Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with Austin's family 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in the drawing room of Bean-Massey-Burge Funeral Home, 733 Dalworth St., Grand Prairie.
Born on June 22, 1914, to the late Mary and Herbert Campbell in Holden, Ark., Austin was the youngest of 12 children.
Respectfully referred to as "The Commander," Austin proudly served in the United States Navy for 21 years. He began his career as a naval flight instructor at the Dallas Naval Air Station. During his career, he logged in excess of 13,000 flying hours. Following World War II, he also served in North Africa, Iceland and the Meditteranean. He completed his career as a squadron commander of P2V attack bombers in the North Atlantic.
Prior to his service as a Navy pilot, Austin worked side-by-side with his wife, Helen, as the owner, editor and publisher of the LaPryor New Era newspaper. Following his retirement from the Navy in 1963, he enjoyed an extended association as private pilot and friend to Dr. George Benson, president of Harding College.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Helen Slater Campbell, in April 1993 after 63 years of marriage, and by his devoted daughter, Barbara Campbell Wallace.
Survivors: Austin is survived by his son, Dr. Robert Austin Campbell and his wife, Carol. He also leaves to cherish his memory, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
