Mrs. Kate Howard was a widow who was the keeper of a rooming house. She was indicted for criminal conspiracy and murder in leading the mob attack of a Springfield restaurant and helping lynch Scott Burton in the 1908 Springfield Race Riot. Still proclaiming her innocence, she committed suicide by taking poison as she was led away to jail.

Aged 40y 9m 7d; suicide by poisoning in the jail annex

Inscription: Her death was essentially a result of the Springfield Riots of 1908, which was a catalyst for the creation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Lest we forget.
