RIVERSIDE, CALIF./NEW LISBON - Hazel Thorson Brunner, age 84, of Riverside, Calif., died peacefully with two of her loving daughters at her side on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003. She was born on April 24, 1919, in Kendall, Wis., the daughter of Ole Thorson and Cordelia (Braund) Thorson. On Feb. 6, 1942, she married Joseph William Brunner in Waukon, Iowa.

They lived in New Lisbon when first married, moved to Sparta for four years, and returned to New Lisbon and raised their family there. She was a active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in New Lisbon in those years. She taught Sunday school and belonged to their circles and woman groups. Hazel worked at Mauston Garment Factory from 1949 until 1971.

In about 1971, they moved to Wausau. She worked there as manager for McDonald's Restaurant. She retired in 1979. They retired in Rothschild. She was active in the Physical Fitness Center and with the senior citizens activities at church. God and her family was her life. Hazel enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting and camping. She was a friend to everyone and will be remembered for her kindness, eagerness to help others and her great personality. She was proud to be from a Norwegian background.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Brunner of Riverside, Calif.; daughters, Marilyn (Don) Derra of New Lisbon, Randa Bafia of Riverside, Calif., and Vickie Schlone of Riverside, Calif.; her precious grandchildren, Lori (Al) Stanek, Hillsboro, Terri (Paul) Tierney, Mount Pleasant, S.C., Bobbi Statz, Middleton, Christi (Jerry) Bruggeman, Marshfield, Robert (Sharla) Bafia, San Diego, Calif., Kellie Bafia, Riverside, Calif., and Joey Schlone, Riverside, Calif.; nine great-grandchildren, Amanda (Hank) Miller, Lindsay Stanek, Tristan and Colby Tierney, Dylan Statz, Carmen and Bobby Bruggeman, and Savannah and Shaun Bafia; three great-great-grandchildren, Bailey Anne and Erin Amanda Miller and Chelsea Nicole Marty; a brother, Russell Thorson of Milwaukee; and two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Thorson of Madison, and Tillie Thorson of Elroy.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Morrey Thorson and Raymond Thorson; two sisters, Jessie Lyons and Ella Larson; and a nephew, Johnny Thorson.

Visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at HARE FUNERAL HOME, New Lisbon. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 20, 2003, at FOUNTAIN LUTHERAN CHURCH, rural Hustler. Pastor Gregory Daher of Bethany Lutheran Church, New Lisbon, will officiate. Viewing will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
