◦Peter Carlos Cornia was born March 8, 1886 at Woodruff in the Rideout Ranch House which was about six miles south of the settlement at Woodruff. He was a son of Peter Carlos and Lucy Helen Dickson Cornia. The family soon moved to the Cornia ranch south of Woodruff which is presently owned by Carlos.
Carlos attended school in the old adobe building in Woodruff, which was used for school, church, dances, recreation and all community meeetings. He completed eighth grade. His first teacher was Ezekiel Lee.
His mother died when he was eight years old. Grandmother Dickson came and lived with the family and cared for them. By this time the family included father, an older half-sister Jeannette, a younger sister, Helen, and a younger brother, Milton. The family moved into the town of Woodruff and the problem of transportation to school and church activities was solved. Carlos' father later found a young woman, Sarah Reed, whom he married 8 April 1896 and she became the new mother. The children loved and respected her for her kindness to them. The family grew in size as Edwin, Louis, Ruth and Reed were born to Peter and Sarah. After leaving school, Carlos went to work on rances, riding the range and feeding cattle. He loved the outdoor life and was an expert shot with a gun. He found the good fishing holes and could bring home a sizeable catch in a short time. He loved horses and cattle and working with them.
He fell in love with Mary Ann Longhurst who attended the same school, church and dances that he had. They were married September 16, 1908 in the Logan temple. To them were born Helen, Hazel, Carlos Wendell, William Dee, Peter Leo and Sara LaRue.
Mary Ann Longhurst was born December 28, 1888 in Woodruff at her Grandmother Dean's adobe house. Her parents were William Henry and Betsey Jane Dean Longhurst. The children in the family were William Albert,Betsey Jane Putnam, Mary Ann Cornia, George Leonard, Clara Marintha Cornia and Asael Dean Longhurst. The family home was on the north side of Woodruff where Asael makes his home now.
Carlos and Mary Ann soon bought a home and a little land where they are presently living. Their first home was a two room log house with a dirt roof. After a few years they were able to build the home where they now live.
They have been active in church and civic activities in the community. They are still singing in the ward choir, of which they have been members since their youth. Carlos was the first Scoutmaster in Woodruff. He was Y.M.M.I.A. president for many years, a cousellor to T.J. Tingey in the ward bishopric for 14 years. He was president of the Woodruff Irrigating Association for several years. He helped organize the Rich County Co-operative Association and served as a director. He was also a director of the Utah State Co-operative Association. He was sherriff of Rich County for four years.
Mary ann was busy, caring for her family and assisting with the ranch work in any way she could. She found time to help in the Chruch, serving as a counsellor and president of the Y.W.M.I.A. for 10 years. She was a Sunday School teacher for 14 years. She taught Primary classes and later became a president. In 1958 she was presented a certificate for 22 years of service in the Primary. Mary Ann continued to serve and became an in-service trainer for the Woodruff Ward and the Woodruff Stake. A pin was presented to her for almost 30 years of service in the Primary.
Carlos and Mary Ann celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 20 Sep 1958. Their family honored them with a reception. Many friends called and others sent cards or flowers. They were again honored, by their children, on their sixtieth anniversary with a reception and party.
Carlos, 84 and Mary Ann, 81 are still enjoing good health. They are able to take care of themselves and live in their home. Carlos still helps care for the ranch. Mary Ann serves many meals to others and enjoys helping those who need help. They have five living children, twenty-two grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
