The four sets of unknown remains in this group burial are almost certainly the oldest in Fort McPherson National Cemetery based on their original burial location. These remains were discovered in 1902 on a farm owned by William Kruger north of Omaha, Nebraska. The site was determined to be the old burial ground of Fort Atkinson (later named Fort Calhoun), the first U.S. military post west of the Missouri River. Established in 1820 by the 6th U.S. Infantry commanded by Col. Henry Atkinson, the fort was active for a relatively short time and was abandoned by the Army in 1827. The four sets of remains were brought to Fort McPherson National Cemetery in 1905 through the efforts of W.H. Woods, a local Fort Calhoun historian who worked with the Army Quartermaster General's office to re-inter the remains.
