Nicholas Fleek Dies; A Pioneer Blacksmith
"Nick" Fleek, a former blacksmith, who has been a familiar Fort Dodge figure since 1869, passed away at his home in this city on Thirteenth street and Fifth avenue north, at 2:00 a. m. today. He has been in a critical condition for about two weeks and has been in failing health for about a year. Last August Mr. Fleet was injured in an automobile accident and this precipitated his fatal illness.
Mr. Fleet was about seventy five years old. He was born May 23, 1840, in Lafayette, Indiana. He served in the Union army with Co. E, Tenth Indiana, during the rebellion. September 24, 1865, he was married at Cedar Rapids to Miss Mary Smith and they moved to Fort Dodge in 1869. Until the last few years Mr. Fleek engaged in blacksmithing and became known all over the countryside. His wife, who is but little his junior, is prostrated by the shock of his death. She has no children to assuage her grief at this time, their only child having died in infancy. Her brother, D. W. Smith, of Waterloo, has been with her for some time and is at her side now.
The funeral has been arranged for Sunday afternoon at 2:00. The place and other details will be announced Saturday.
