Mr. Billy Joe Akins, 78, 871 Bellview Road, Rockmart, died Thursday, July 10, 2008. Mr. Akins was born on April 16, 1930 in Rockmart, son of the late William Benjamin Akins and the late Ethel Louise Coats Akins. He was retired from Lockheed Martin and was owner and manager of Akins Printing Inc. of Rockmart. Mr. Akins was a U.S. veteran having served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. His wife, Betty Ann Garrett Akins; a brother, William Harold Akins; and three sisters, Earline McEver, Nell Wiggins and Margaret Edna Akins, preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, William Benjamin (Bill) Akins and Michael Wade Akins both of Rockmart; and two daughters, Sheila Louise Brumbelow of Cedartown and Joanne Marie Carroll of Rockmart; five grandchildren. The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13 in the chapel of the Freeman Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. John Hooper officiating. Interment was in the family lot of Prospect Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites provided by Rockmart Lodge #97 F&AM and the West Georgia Masonic Memorial Association. The Honor Guard of the Brown-Wright American Legion Post #12 provided honorary military graveside rites. Pallbearers included Phil Wiggins, Tim Wiggins, Richard Hawes, Allen McEver, Bobby Helms, and Butch Garrett. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Rockmart Masonic Lodge #97 F&AM. Freeman Harris Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
