He was manger for J. C. Penny in Portage and Hartford and then was let go during the depression in 1932 or 1933. He got into the grocery business 1 July 1934. He and a partner, Gene Burke, opened Chilstrom & Burke grocery store at 494 Spring Road, Elmhurst, IL. They sold out 30 April 1947. He then worked for the Rothmeyer Coal Yard in Elmhurst and then for Meyers Real Estate where he handled the insurance.
