Simon Hooper was a veteran of both the Mexican War and the Civil War. He was a farmer in Maine when he enlisted in Massachusetts at the age of 22 in 1842 in the US Army Co K 1st Dragoons. He reenlisted in 1847 while stationed at Ft. Leavenworth.

At Ft. Leavenworth Simon married Mary Ann Short on 4 Feb 1847, a widow with two young children. Her husband, Martin Doll, was killed while serving with the US Army.

Their two oldest children, Mary Martha and John, were born at Ft. Leavenworth. In 1852 Simon was discharged and the family moved to Fremont County, Iowa. They had 3 more children: Marietta, Josephine and Alice.

Simon enlisted to fight in the War of the Rebellion. He enlisted in "Sear's Rangers" in Aug 1861. At the age of 42 he enlisted on 23 Dec 1861 as Second Lieutenant in Co G 4th Iowa Cavalry. Simon served with the company in Missouri and Arkansas until he resigned for ill health on 3 Sep 1862.

He returned to Fremont County, IA and his family, and he was a farmer. Minnie Hooper was born in 1866. Mary Ann had two children from her previous marriage to Martin Doll. Simon and Mary Ann had 9 children.

Simon died in 1893 at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 25 days.
