James was born in Hazen,ARK,but grew up in
Rock Island when his parents moved there to
make a better life for the family.
He enlisted in the Marines 5 August 1968 at
the Des Moines Recruiting Office in Iowa.James
was 18 years and 10 days old.After boot camp
and infantry training he went home for a short
leave during Christmas.
Returning back to his duty station James was
issued orders for Vietnam.Arriving in Vietnam
28 January 1969 James was assigned to the
2nd Platoon with Hotel Company,2nd Battalion,
3rd Marine Regiment,3rd Marine Division.
At approximately 1530H the company was am-
bushed by enemy forces,4 kilometers south
of Fire Support Torch and 19 kilometers south
southeast of Khe Sanh Airfield.James and 3
Marines died during the ambush.James died as
a result of shrapnel wounds from a rocket pro-
pelled grenade that penetrated his head,chest,
face and the back of his neck.
James was single and served his country for 7
months and 6 days and was KIA#39,417.
He had been in Vietnam for 1 month and 21
days.
James was 18 years,7 months and 23 days
old.
Survived by his mother;Marcie Geneva King
and 2 brothers;Joe Carroll King Jr(unknown
name of other brother)of 3205 6th Ave,Rock
Island,IL and his father;Joe Carroll King Sr of
RR2 Box 352-B,Colona, IL.
His grandparents;Elwood & Sallie Wheatley.
