J .V. Abbott, 61-year-old Lewiston real estate salesman, died yesterday morning at 7 after suffering a heart attack at his Clarkston home. He had been in failing health the last year. Death came at his family home at 1409 Highland, where he had lived since 1943. Except for brief periods, Mr. Abbott's life long occupation was selling.

James Vernon Abbott was born on May 25, 1894, in Tyler, Wash. He was 20 when he went to Spokane as a driver-salesman for a milk company. Two years later, in 1916 he engaged in a dray and transfer business at Plummer, Idaho.

Came Here In 1911
He came to Lewiston in 1918 to operate the James dairy on the north bank of the Clearwater River near the Camas Prairie Railroad Bridge. In 1922 he was employed by O. E. Norberg as a Clerk at the Lewiston Grocery Co. at 706 Main St., now the site of Hughes Apparel.

He remained there until 1928 when he joined Spengler's Bakery Co. of Lewiston (now the Holsum Baking Co, outlet) here as an account solicitor for the North Central Idaho area.

Mr. Abbott left Spengler's in 1933 to join Stevens-Davis Co. of Chicago. The firm specialized in training salesmen in various fields. He lived in Seattle while with the Chicago firm and traveled extensively throughout the west during that period.

He returned to the Northwest to stay in 1941, working for the Pacific Fruit Co. at Bellingham for a short while and later operating a motel and service station at Yakima.

He entered the real estate business here in 1943, operating the J. V. Abbott office at 18th and Main Sts. In about 1945 he operated a cattle ranch on the Snake River 11 miles west of here.

Headed Realty Board
He was a former president of the Lewiston Realty Board, retiring from that office in January of last year. He was a member of the Lewis-Clark Moose Lodge of Clarkston and a former member of the Elks Lodge.

In 1913 he married Virginia Henry at Nampa on July 26, 1940.

Survivors besides his wife are eight sons, Joe, Terry, Pete, David, Paul, Robert, and Lee, all at home, and James V. Abbott, Jr. of Seattle; a daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Steen of Seattle; a sister, Mrs. Clarence Foss of Seattle; and five grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Abbott, Jr., Mrs. Steen, and Mrs. Foss arrived here last night by air from Seattle.
