He may have been named for George Elphonzo Cox. His father, Thomas J. Ball lived and worked on the Cox farm in Howes Valley, Hardin County, Kentucky. George Cox was about Thomas' age and died at the age of 24 in Feb. 1875, a short time before he came to Indiana.
