Afton was born on Nov 22, 1915 in Provo, Utah to Thomas Joseph and Ina Louisa Foote Lewis. She married her childhood sweetheart, Jess Ashton on May 8, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Jess and Afton made their home in Provo & raised their 4 children surrounded by a large and supportive extended family. Jess passed away on May 4, 1969 and since that time Afton has devoted her life to building strong family ties.
Afton grew up in the Provo Pleasant View area where she was active in 4H and excelled in school & student government. After receiving a scholarship to Utah State Agricultural College and attending for a year, she attended the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City returning home after a time to be close to her family. Afton worked as a bookkeeper throughout her entire life working at DTR company, Wasatch Chemical Co. with her husband, Wholesale Gas Inc., & P.F. Ashton's Auto Rentals. She continued working tirelessly until age 78.
Active in the LDS Church, she served in Primary, Mutual and in the Relief Society Presidency, spending much time organizing bazaars and sewing endlessly for them. She continued throughout the years using those talents as she sewed for her many granddaughters. Always actively involved in her children's lives, she served in the PTA and supported her children in their school and extra-curricular activities. She also enjoyed her association in the community with the Culturettes.
In recent years she spent much time compiling a life history which included not only her life story but also that of her children's. This project has left a great legacy for her family.
Afton is survived by her 3 daughters and one son; 23 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 2 brothers, Eldon (Zelma) Lewis and Wayne (Betty) Lewis.
