MRS. ESTHER BALDWIN
NEOSHO PIONEER DIES
Esther Burkett Baldwin was born February 8, 1855, at Findlay, Ohio, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Adams Burkett. After the death of her father, the family came to Kansas in 1869, settling on a claim in Centerville Township. Her death marks the passing of one of the oldest pioneers residing continuously in this section.
At the age of 15 years, she taught the first term of school in the district later organized as Meeker Dist. #69. In the two succeeding terms she taught in Rural School Dist. near Chanute.
On August 30, 1875, she was united in marriage with Henry N. Baldwin. To this union were born 5 children: the late Harry D. Baldwin, Jean Baldwin, who passed away in early childhood, Cloise H. Baldwin, Ft. Worth, Texas, the late Grace Baldwin Allen, and Berch Baldwin Hunt of Erie. Besides the 2 remaining children, she is survived by one brother, Riley Burkett, of Erie, 16 grandchildren, one having preceded her in death, also 11 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Galesburg Christian Church at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon {Oct. 15th} with the Rev. Chester Balf of Erie officiating, assisted by Rev. L. D. Murphy. pastor of the Galesburg Christian Church.
The flowers were arranged by Mrs. Ben Myers and Mrs. Ivan Green. Pallbearers were: Raymond Sharp, Erie, S. W. Shaw, H. I. Shaw, Glenn Reed, D.G. Springer, and R.J. Manger, all of Galesburg.
Mrs. E. Leo Balf sang as a solo "Sometime We'll Understand." Mrs. Balf and D. E. Womeldorff sang "We'll Never Grow Old" and "Under His Wing," with Mrs. Q. D. Reed at the piano. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Galesburg, Ks.
