Sophie Maria Dorothea (Bertels) Buls was a religious woman. She and her husband, Andreas Buls, prepared for a trip to Columbus, Texas on June 23, 1886. She had a premonition that she would not return home alive. She informed her minister, Friedrich Jesse, how she wanted her funeral service preformed. She picked and laidout her burial dress as she packed for her trip. Everyone laughed at her prediction as she seemed to approch her "grim" destiny with a degree of joy.
The couple left their Salem community early on morning of June 24, 1886. About noon of that day, their carriage was attempting to cross Cummings Creek just north of Columbus. Midway across the old wooden bridge, the horse reared and overturned the carriage. Both Sophie and Andreas were thrown off the bridge to the partly dry creek bed below. Andreas landed in soft sand. Sophie hit her head on a large rock in the creek bed and died.
Sophie was buried the next day at Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Salem community, Washington Co., Texas in the funeral dress she had selected. Her service was, music and all, as she had requested. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
