Death Of Jared B. Hitchcock

After a long and painful illness, Mr. Jared B. Hitchcock died at his house on Tremont Avenue at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon, adding one more to the death role Of the pioneers Of Scott County who have passed away in the past 12 months. Mr. Hitchcock was in the 67th year Of his age, having been born July 4,1818, at Great Barrington, Massachusetts. From 8 to 16 years Of age he was employed in a large cotton mill as an operator and subsequently removed to Hartford, Connecticut, where he was engaged as instructor in a deaf and dumb asylum.

In 1841 he located in Davenport, and three years later was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Hubbard, daughter Of Asahel Hubbard, who survives him. After a residence Of 17 years in Davenport, he removed to Durant, Iowa, engaging in agricultural pursuits, which he followed for about 12 years, returning and resuming his residence in Davenport in 1871, since which time he lived here.

He was engaged in the stone cutting business until his recent retirement. He leaves seven sons and two daughters, the following: Albert C, stone mason, Winfield, Kansas; C.H., engineer, Avoca, Iowa; J.H., carpenter, Avoca, Iowa; Will H., carpenter, Ogden, Boone County, Iowa; George C. and Fred A., railroad employees, Davenport, Mrs. Ada T. Clark, Ogden, Iowa; and Mrs. Cynthia C. Snover, Ovid, Michigan. A brother, Charles Hitchcock, residing in Cordova, Illinois, is the only surviving member Of a family Of eight children. A brother, Harvey, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, long since dead, were among the first missionaries to the Sandwich Islands.

Mr. Hitchcock was a life long member Of the Congregational Church. Mr. Hitchcock was a member Of the Scott County Pioneer Settlers Society from the date Of its organization, serving as president only two years ago. He was the first deacon elected in the Congregational Church in this city. He was a fine man - honorable, upright, and very benevolent. He has been an invalid for more than two years and suffered greatly the past three months but with heroic patience. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon with services at the Congregational Church at 2:30 o'clock.
