In 1864, John Keep Boies was elected to the Michigan Legislature and was elected to the State Senate in 1868 and 1874. In 1871, Mr. Boies was appointed to the State Board of Control of Railroads by Gov. Baldwin in which post he served four years. He was re-appointed to that post by Gov. Croswell and served for nine years. He was appointed by President Garfield to the United States Board of Indian Commissioners and served in that post from 1880 to 1885. In the Congressional campaign of 1882 he was the candidate of the Republican Party for the Second District of Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives but was defeated.
