Prominent Lawyer Passed Away
at 9 O'clock Last Night
RESULT OF PARALYSIS
Was Stricken Early Tuesday Morning
and He Never Regained Consciousness

Mr. J. S. Grogan, for more than twenty years a prominent lawyer of this city and section, died last night at 9 o'clock at his home on Cherry street. after an illness of a little more than two days from a stroke of paralysis. His death, coming so suddenly, will be a great shock to his many friends throughout this section. While his condition was recognized as serious from the time of the stroke early Tuesday morning, still there was hope held out for his recovery until the very last. Mr. Grogan was taken ill in O'Hanlon's drug store late Monday afternoon, and the attending physician diagnosed the case as an attack of acute indigestion. Throughout Monday night he continued to grow worse, and about 4 o'clock Tuesday morning the fatal stroke of paralysis came, taking effect in the left side. He was unconscious from that hour until his death. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by the members of his family. Also his sister, Mrs. Homer DeShazo, of Ridgeway, Va. was here, having arrived Tuesday afternoon. His death was calm. He seemed to fall asleep. No arrangements as yet have been made for the funeral services. Mr. Grogan was 49 years old and had resided in Winston-Salem since he was a boy, his father, Mr. Martin Grogan, having moved here from Rockingham County. He had been a practicing attorney of this city for 23 years, having located here immediately after his graduation from Davidson College at the age of 26. He was married 2 years later to Miss Mamie Perkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Redding Perkins, then of Raleigh, and later of Winston-Salem. The wife survives, and from their union four daughters are living, these being Misses Lilly, Nellie, Elizabeth and Mary Grogan. The deceased is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Homer DeShazo of Ridgeway. Va., and four half sisters, Mrs. George Beall of Rockingham, Mrs. Marcus H. Allen of Littleton, Mrs. O. K. Utosell of Los Angeles, Cal., and Miss Ida Price of Colorado. None of these, except Mrs. DeShazo were here at the time of Mr. Grogan's death. Mr. Martin Grogan, father of the deceased, was a prominent merchant and tobacco manufacturer of this city for years. Attorney J. S. Grogan will he missed greatly in the courtroom, where he had a large practice. His familiar figure will be missed on the streets, where he liked to mingle with his fellows. He will be missed in the Episcopal church of which he had been long a member. The bereaved widow and children have the deepest sympathy of a multitude of friends who join them in mourning the untimely death of one of Winston-Salem's and Forsyth county's prominent citizens.
