Whit was the son of Alpheus Jacob and Mary Ann (Albertson) Swayze, born August 4, 1859 in Hope, Warren Co., New Jersey in either the original Swayze family homestead or the farmhouse his father built on Nightingale Road. He was brother to his three sisters: Margaret Adelia, Virginia S., and Israella R.

As a young man, Whit enjoyed participating in the Mount Hermon Cornet Band and kept the horn throughout his life.

He married Laura Adam Oberholtzer on February 22, 1886. Together they raised their children Cora Ethel and Earl Valentine Swayze.

His devotion to his entire family lasted a lifetime, and as a result he divided his time between Hope, Warren Co., New Jersey where Adelia (Delia) and Virginia (Jenny) lived out their long lives on the family farm, and Willow Grove, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania where he lived with his wife Laura and where their children grew up. He was a talented carpenter and helped construct Willow Grove Park in suburban Philadelphia as well as many homes in that locale.

Whitfield was a prayerful person, a caring father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a true family man. He died three days before Christmas, 1943 and was laid to rest in Moravian Cemetery on Christmas Eve.
