Etta Viola Cook was born in Illinois, on March 14, 1860, the daughter of James E. Ward and Sarah Jane Benton Ward. She married Henry Cook about 1877 in Missouri. They became the parents of the following children:

When Henry passed away December 10, 1903, leaving Etta to raise the younger children alone, she worked as a nurse to support herself and her children.
Etta lived to be 102 years old. She is a member of a lineage of women that produced four centenarians in four generations. Etta's aunt, Angeline "Angie" Benton Rood lived to be 102 years 9 months and 1 day old. Etta's sister Eveline Ward Wells (1873 - 1978) lived to be 104, and her first cousin, Mary J. Benton Pemberton (1910 - 2011) lived to be 101 years old. In addition, two of Etta's daughter's lived to be at least 90. Minnie Cook Humbruck (1880 – 1979) lived to be 99 years old and Myrtle Cook Huey (1877 – 1967) lived to be 90.
On the occasion of her 102nd birthday an article appeared on Mar 27, 1962, in the Greeley Daily Tribune, on which the following story is partially based.
Etta Cook, the mother of Weld County resident, Mrs. Minnie Humbrock, and the sister of Greeley resident, Mrs. Eva Wells, was honored March 14th in Clinton, Mo. on her 102nd birthday. Mrs. Cook, who resides at the Clinton Nursing Home, was presented with a three-tiered cake made by two former neighbors at a special party on the occasion. The elaborate creation portrayed the major occurrences of Etta's life, including her birth, her marriage and the births of each of her six children. In addition it depicted the death of one of her children.

After Mrs. Cook's husband passed away in December of 1903 she worked as a nurse to support her young children.
