Rites Held Friday for Mrs. C P Day
Thanksgiving Day marked the passing of one of Okolona's most admired and beloved matrons when at 9 o'clock that morning Mrs. Charles Presley Day died at her home following a heart attack about a week earlier. She was 87.
Mrs. Day, the former Miss Mary Clifford Savage, was a member of a prominent Okolona family, being a daughter of the late Clifford M Savage and the late Mrs. Adeline Madry Savage. Her father came to Okolona from England when he was a young man and established one of the area's first banks, the old Merchants and Farmers Bank. He served as the bank's president until his retirement when he was seceded by his son, W E Savage. Her only sister, Mrs. T J Lyles, died in December, 1955.
On February 3 1897 she was married to Mr. Day, independent dealer in lumber and ties, who died in December, 1939.
Mrs. Day was a devout Christian and had been a member of the First Baptist Church since childhood and was known for her many charities through the church and personally. She had contributed much to the cultural, religious and social life of Okolona and was recognized as one of its best Bible scholars. She was an avid reader and kept abreast of the times.
Mrs. Day loved people and was devoted to her loved ones and a wide circle of friends and never seemed to tire of doing favors for them.
Devoted relatives and friends assembled in Mrs. Days home at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon to pay her final loving tribute. The services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Allison Bell, who read scripture she had selected for her rites. Burial was in I O O F Cemetery with Barry Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were R A Dean, Walter Simpson, J E McCain Jr., Hansel Rogers, Arthur Quinn and Wayne Jernigan.
She leaves a niece, Mrs. Glenn Marshall of Jacksonville, Fla., a great nephew, C A Lyles of Nashville, Tenn., three great nieces, Mrs. Roy Byars of Jackson, Mrs. Charles Whetstone of Woodville, Mrs. Vernon Sanders of Washington, D C, five great great nieces and two great great nephews.
