Harold Baumwoll passed away on August 5th 1995 and is buried at Mogen David Cemetery (Star of David) in Ft Lauderdale, Florida.
Other members of the Moskowitz and Vascovitz families are interred at the Old Montifiore Cemetery in St Albans, Queens, NY.in an area reserved for those people who were associated with the Village of Tiraspol, Moldova near Odessa. (I think)
My Mom was born in a small village of Tiraspol,Bessarabia now Moldova on the Dnister River near Odessa the second child of Josef and Leah Vascovitz.
At the age of 11 her brothers Al (Avram) and Meyer accompanied her on her emigration from Russia to America with her heroic widowed mother after narrowly escaping death by slipping across the river at night into Romania.
Sailing from South Hampton, England aboard the SS Carmania
she arrived at Ellis Island on Jan 31st 1922 a frightened child, who later in life wrote of her fears of the dreaded eye exam at Ellis Island and experiences in the shtettle where the Cossack raids were a fearsome part of her childhood.
Marie's brothers Meyer/Mike Vascovitz and Alan Vee predeceased her.
The family name- Becker and Starbeker is also associated with Moskowitz which was her mother's maiden name. Other names connected to this family that I am aware of are Dichter / Decker, Dechter and Appel.
She went to secretarial school and studied bookkeeping becoming a naturalized citizen.
Marie married Harold Baumwoll and while living in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, NY gave birth to Joel in 1940 and Gene in 1945.
In 1950 Marie moved to Montclair , NJ a leafy Victorian suburb of NY and began to work in the credit dept of Sears Robuck. A working mom, she was an able housekeeper and mother.
In 1955 she realized a dream and the family moved to White Meadow Lake in Rockaway, NJ to a cute cape cod style house
which she decorated and loved.
Marie was a working mother and was employed by Klockner Steel Products in Rockaway as their bookkeeper until illness forced her retirement.
An excellent cook and avid skilled baker her cakes and cookies were eagerly anticipated at family gatherings.
Marie was a skilled and talented seamstress who sewed many of her own clothes and lovingly knitted sweaters for her family and grandchildren.
Family was important to her and she wrote regularly to her brothers , sister in laws, and friends. She was a sweet and good soul
