Born Jan 5, 1896, in Pine Park, he was a son of Charles S and Chrissie Stinger Barwick. He attended Norman Park Institute and Mercer University at Macon. He was a retired produce broker and farmer, and lived in Pahokee,Fl before returning to Ochlocknee three years ago. On Feb 16, 1916, he married Kate Harrell, who died April 18, 1978. Survivors include a son, J.S. Barwick, Pahokee, Fl; two daughters, Katie Dewolfe, Boca Raton, FL, and Nancy Crews, Ochlocknee; a brother B B Barwick, Mexico Beach, FL; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Career: He went to Miami before 1925 and started building homes and buildings during the real estate boom. Made a lot of money but then the bust came in 1926 and the family had to go back to their Georgia roots. By the early 1930s, the family was headed back to South Florida and took up residence in Canal Point on the Eastern short of Lake Okeechobee. The rich soil had attracted many farmers from areas in South Georgia and Alabama who were failing due to soil quality and lack of water. Gene Barwick's cousins, the Mack Chastain family, had started a big farm operation as well as other farmers had done. It is not verifiable that he worked with his cousins or not. The family remained in the area until 1938 when they moved to Cairo, Ga, where he became the General Manager of the Grady County Syrupmakers' Association, marketing cane syrup for table syrup and food sweetners. The family remained in Cairo until about 1941 when they moved to Chosen, FL, a little further south of Canal Point. There he worked for Curtis Thompson in selling and processing fresh green vegetables, primarily green beans, for shipment to Northern markets. The packing operation was in Belle Glade, adjoining Chosen to the East. In the late 40s, the family ended up on Pompano Beach where he and his brother Albert formed a produce brokerage firm with an office at the huge Pompano Beach State Farmers' Market. They operated that business until 1960, going in the off season to South Georgia to also broker vegetables and fruits from those markets. In 1960, he became the General Manager of the Lake Okeechobee Farmers' Cooperative in Canal Point. He and his wife resided in Pahokee, which adjoined to the South. He remained in Pahokee until his wife died and then eventually moved to Ocklocknee, GA, and lived with his daughter Nancy until his death. - Charles Jefferson Barwick, grandson
