25th California Governor, elected in 1922. Born William Richardson in Friends Colony, Michigan, he legally adopted Friend to his name in honor of his Quaker beliefs. Moving to California at a young age, Richardson entered the newspaper industry and was publisher of the San Bernardino Times-Index from 1896 until 1901 and of the Berkeley Gazette from 1901 until 1915. In 1912, he was appointed Superintendent of the State Printing Office by then Governor Hiram Johnson until 1915, when he was elected California State Treasurer until 1923. He was Governor of California until January 4, 1927. He later went on to serve briefly on the California State Building & Loan Commission from 1932 until 1933 and as State Superintendent of Banks from 1934 until 1939.
