"He enlisted for the Civil War, 6 July 1861; won a medal of honor during the war; was promoted to rank of Sergeant for an act of valor which was outside the call of duty; he fired a shot that took the Confederate flag from Ft. Sumter and placed the Stars and Stripes there; he also saved two comrades from drowning; served in Co. D, 3rd Artillery; mustered out 17 Nov. 1865."
John also resided in Pawtucket and his children were born there and later in his life he lived in Central Falls.
