Mary was the oldest child of John Keenan and Ann Heslin. She grew up in Randolph Township (Village of Port Oram), Morris County, New Jersey. She married Daniel McLaughlin (son of James McLaughlin and Mary Ann Bohem) on February 11, 1872, at St. Mary's RC Church (today located in Wharton-Dover, Morris County, New Jersey).
Ten children were born of this union: Mary, Roseanna, Sarah, Margaret, Katherine, James , Isabella, Bridget, Alice and Agnes.
Daniel and Mary purchased land and a home in the Mine Hill/Irondale section of Wharton-Dover and the family resided their for many years.
